ALAC

DESCRIPTION: The Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand (ALAC) was established in 1976 by Act of Parliament, following a report by the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Sale of Liquor. The Commission recommended establishing a permanent council whose aim was to encourage responsible use and minimise misuse. Our viision is a New Zealand drinking culture that supports the moderate use of alcohol so that whänau and communities enjoy life, free from alcohol harms

ERMA New Zealand

DESCRIPTION: The Environmental Risk Management Authority was established under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996. "To protect the environment and the health and safety of people and communities by preventing or managing the adverse effects of hazardous substances and new organisms." The Authority's main role is to make decisions on applications to import, develop, or field test new organisms; or to import or manufacture hazardous substances. ERMA New Zealand's main aim is to support the Authority in its decision making role to meet the purpose of the HSNO Act in a way which allows New Zealanders' to benefit from the use of New Organisms and Hazardous Substances.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ)

DESCRIPTION: Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is an independent statutory established by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991. Working within an integrated food regulatory system involving the New Zealand Government and the governments of Australia and its States and Territories, we set food standards for the two countries. FSANZ works in partnership with the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. At FSANZ we develop the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) which controls the use of ingredients, processing aids, colourings, additives and vitamins in foods. The Code also specifies the compositional requirements of some foods (for example, dairy, meat and beverages), and sets out which novel food ingredients, food additives and processing aids may be used in the food supply. Labelling standards for both packaged and unpackaged food, including specific mandatory warnings or advisory labels, claims on foods and nutritional information, are also our responsibility.
KEY WORDS: We develop food standards for both countries in consultation with other government agencies and stakeholders having regard for food regulatory policies which are endorsed by the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council (which includes the New Zealand Minister for Food Safety) and other committees. This process ensures a harmonised approach to food regulation. In New Zealand we do not have responsibility for food handling, residue limits for agricultural and veterinary products or primary production; these areas are covered by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority.

MAF Biosecurity New Zealand

DESCRIPTION: MAF Biosecurity New Zealand is the division of MAF charged with leadership of the New Zealand biosecurity system. It encompasses facilitating international trade, protecting the health of New Zealanders and ensuring the welfare of our environment, flora and fauna, marine life and Maori resources. We have around 1000 full time and part-time staff, based across New Zealand and overseas. Ministry of Health

DESCRIPTION: The Ministry of Health aims to ensure that the health and disability support system works for all New Zealanders.
