statutory established by the Food
Standards Australia New Zealand Act
1991. Working within an integrated
food regulatory system involving the
New Zealand Government and the
governments of Australia and its States
and Territories, we set food standards
for the two countries. FSANZ works in
partnership with the New Zealand Food
Safety Authority. At FSANZ we develop the Australia New
Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) which
controls the use of ingredients, processing aids,
colourings, additives and vitamins in foods.
The Code also specifies the compositional
requirements of some foods (for example, dairy,
meat and beverages), and sets out which novel
food ingredients, food additives and processing
aids may be used in the food supply. Labelling
standards for both packaged and unpackaged
food, including specific mandatory warnings or
advisory labels, claims on foods and nutritional
information, are also our responsibility.
KEY WORDS: We develop food standards for both countries
in consultation with other government agencies
and stakeholders having regard for food
regulatory policies which are endorsed by the
Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation
Ministerial Council (which includes the
New Zealand Minister for Food Safety) and
other committees. This process ensures a
harmonised approach to food regulation.
In New Zealand we do not have responsibility
for food handling, residue limits for agricultural and veterinary products or primary production; these areas are covered by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority.
