Prof. Jim Mann awarded Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Award
Date: 21 Feb 2013
Professor Jim Mann, a Principal Investigator at the Riddet Institute, and Professor of Human Nutrition and Medicine at the University of Otago, has been awarded the Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society Award in 2013.
Professor Mann was born in South Africa and educated there and in England. Graduating from Medicine from the University of Cape Town and Oxford, he had the opportunity of experiencing the contrasting patterns of disease in affluent and impoverished societies and was impressed by the extent to which inappropriate nutrition contributed to the major health issues in both.
From the earliest stage of his career, he was keen to combine a career in clinical medicine with the study of nutrition. Most of his early professional life was spent in Oxford where he worked as a researcher, lecturer, junior doctor and later physician.
He is also the Director of the Edgar National Centre for Diabetes and Obesity Research and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Human Nutrition. His research and clinical work have principally been in the fields of lipids and carbohydrates as they relate to coronary heart disease and diabetes and in the field of obesity.
