Commerce Commission's decision on milk price inquiry due

The Commerce Commission will release its decision tomorrow on whether to hold an inquiry into the retail price of milk. A Consumer NZ commissioned survey of 1000 people found 91 per cent thought they were paying a high price for milk compared with other supermarket staples and 79 per cent wanted an inquiry into dairy pricing. No apologies for high fruit & vege prices - Horticulture NZ

Horticulture New Zealand President Andrew Fenton told the industry's annual conference in Rotorua today the fresh fruit and vegetable industry is not benefiting from recent high prices. “We don't apologise for high prices, because we don't control prices,” Andrew said. “Consumers might be paying more for fresh fruit and vegetables, but as all growers very well know, this does not automatically translate into increased returns for them.” Just in ... more

Fonterra confirms price drop for butter and cheese

Fonterra Brands New Zealand has confirmed that it will reduce butter and cheese prices next month in line with international price decreases. Winter and disasters hit food prices

Salad vegetables shot up in price in June as winter hit and because of a shortage of some products from Australia, pushing overall food prices up 7.5 per cent for the year. But not all prices were rising - meat, poultry and fish prices fell in June, with chicken prices down sharply. Food prices up in May

Food prices rose 0.5 percent in May 2011 and were up 7.4 percent on a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said today. The fruit and vegetable subgroup had the largest impact on food prices in May, rising 1.6 percent. This was influenced by seasonal price rises for lettuce (up 45.6 percent), tomatoes (up 16.9 percent), and cucumber (up 74.7 percent).
