GO
KIDS!
www.gokids.org.nz
DESCRIPTION:
GO
KIDS! is a New Zealand-wide project to enhance the health & fitness of children
participating in before school, after school and school holiday care programmes,
through a set of resources that provides regular exercise activities and nutrition
advice. Run by a non-profit organisation, the National Association for Out of
School Care and Recreation (NAOSCAR) and supported by funding from Coca-Cola,
GO KIDS! already reaches over 750 participating OSCAR groups serving 100,000
New Zealand children. The NAOSCAR sees the GO KIDS! initiative as a major
strategy to put activity back into out of school time, and to help tackle the
issues of childhood fitness and obesity.

The
New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership
www.foodsafe.org.nz
DESCRIPTION: The Foodsafe Partnership is a collaboration between members
of the food industry, service industries, producer boards, public health
agencies, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Health and consumer
groups. The group's aim is to reduce food borne illness by providing consistent
and appropriate food safety and food handling information for New Zealand
consumers.
The New Zealand Foodsafe Partnership was set up in 1998 by a small
group representing the food industry, consumer groups, public health groups,
MAF Food (now the New Zealand Food Safety Authority) and the Ministry
of
Health, to promote consistent and appropriate food safety messages to New
Zealand consumers. Each summer since, it has organised a Keep Food Safe
campaign, highlighting food handling and food hygiene issues in an attempt
to reduce the estimated 119,000 cases of food borne illness that occur
in
New Zealand each year. The campaigns recognise that no matter how much
care is taken to produce safe food, food handling by consumers at home
plays
a key role in preventing food-borne illness. Research suggests that food-borne
illness is costing New Zealand $55 million a year in lost productivity,
medical costs and other associated costs, while scientists believe that
figure is conservative - the true cost could be as much as $90 million.
The site is based around a set of food handling guidelines (the Clean,
Cook, Cover and Chill principles), but also incorporates contact details
for local
Public Health Service offices, a News section, with media releases and
copies of the Foodsafe newsletter, and a Links page, listing some of the
best food
safety resources around the internet. For industry, there is a section
explaining how companies and organisations can join or support the Partnership
by helping
to spread the word. Subject to conditions, the Foodsafe logo can be incorporated
in your company's packaging, information pamphlets, shopping bags, advertising
brochures, educational materials, place mats or recipe cards that have
food
safety messages. To see how you can get involved, visit www.foodsafe.org.nz

DESCRIPTION: The Heart Foundation aims to promote good health for all New Zealanders
and to reduce suffering and early death from heart and blood vessel disease.
Pick the Tick programme.
The National
Heart Foundation of New Zealand is a leader in the fight to get New Zealanders
to eat more healthy foods. One of its key objectives
is "to stabilise rates of obesity in children and adults by improving
nutrition and increasing physical activity". For example, there are
currently 80 companies and 750 products with 'Pick the Tick' status, and
the Foundation estimates that through the adoption of the scheme by food
suppliers and manufacturers, thirty-three tonnes of salt was removed from
everyday foods available to New Zealand consumers in one twelve month period.
