DESCRIPTION: Al
Dente is an Auckland-based food consultancy which provides
cooking classes, Italian Chef at Home, team building and import/export
services, the
'New Zealand
home of Italian food & culture'. It is run by Raffaela Delmonte and
husband Paolo, an Italian couple who migrated to New Zealand
in 1997, and who also co-ordinate the Auckland branch (Convivium) of the international
Slow Food movement. Raffaela is a a member of the New Zealand panel for Extra
Virgin Olive Oil screening, and an active teacher, writer, speaker and chef.
Her first book The Fragrance of Basil won the 2002 Gourmand World Cookbook
Award as best food literature book, English language. She returns every year
to Italy, in search of Italian culinary history and traditions and to discover
and document the food and wine link.

The
Esplanade Hotel:

DESCRIPTION:
The Esplanade has dominated Devonport's waterfront since
1903, just 10 minutes by ferry across the harbour from the centre of
Auckland city. Modelled on the resort hotels of the English seaside towns
of Brighton and Blackpool, the Esplanade is an elegant building oozing
Edwardian character. It was recently restored and refurbished as a boutique
luxury hotel, and is now operated by the people behind the very successful
Mecca cafe group. The hotel has 17 rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms,
including a luxury suite, and a penthouse apartment, 2 bars, a restaurant,
and brasserie. Courtyard and footpath dining options add to the Esplanade
experience, especially in summer, with the busy Waitemata harbour and
a pohutukawa-edged park just across the street.
The
website gives details of the various accommodation options and
tariffs, along with a pre-booking/reservation form. Both restaurant
and brasserie are covered under 'Dining', with menus available
for download. With its central location, local amenities, and
catering, dining, luxury suites and penthouse all under one roof
the Esplanade also offers an attractive venue for weddings, private
functions, corporate getaways, seminars, meetings and conferences.
A 'How to find us' section offers advice and directions, along
with a printable map, while other sections cover the attractions
of Devonport and the colourful history of the hotel. From its
low times as a run-down pub and band bar during the seventies
and eighties, this long-standing Auckland landmark has come full
cycle, back to its full Edwardian splendour, and back to its
original seaside resort hotel role, the grand old lady of the
Auckland waterfront.
