Caffe
Laffare
www.laffare.co.nz
SOTW
Mar 03: Caffe L'affare is a Wellington institution, a coffee house, speciality
coffee importer, roaster, distributor and equipment supplier established
by Italian Enzo Laffare in 1990. The College St. cafe has won a
local following over the years for its food and coffee (voted "Best
Espresso in Wellington"), while doubling as a showroom for a full
range of coffee equipment for home and cafes, cups and saucers, specialty
teas, and some deli lines. Included in the service offered to cafes and
restaurants is advice on equipment selection, how to set up an espresso
station, training issues, menu design, and marketing. Caffe L'affare
also
runs an espresso school several times a month and will provide on-site
espresso training.
The
Caffe L'affare site incorporates an online shop selling all the equipment
and supplies stocked by the Caffe, plus various Caffe L'affare-themed
items and gift packs. It is very easy to use, simple to follow, and comes
with excellent "driving instructions" and user help. They ship
nationwide, and overseas. Another section of the site, "The Perfect
Brew", contains advice on how to prepare the best coffee using Espresso,
Plunger, Filter machine, and Stovetop methods, plus a list of coffee
FAQ's.
This is a striking, well-thought out site that gives us all easy online
access to some of the best coffee and coffee-related equipment around.
Recommended to every coffee-lover.

Fine
Wine Online
www.finewineonline.co.nz
SOTW
Sept 04: The Auckland-based Fine Wine Delivery Company has operated Fine
Wine Online since 1998, one of the country's most comprehensive online
wine shopping sites. Set up and run by Jeff Poole, with daughter Tracey
and other family members, FWDC has become known for its range, competitive
pricing, and commitment to wine education, appreciation, and evaluation.
All wines sold have been tasted by the team, and tasing notes are attached
to each item in the shop. Regular wine maker hosted tastings and wine and
food evenings are held in their own Cellar Lounge. As well as the bricks-and-mortar
version of the wine shop, FWDC also operates Fine Wine Cellar Storage,
a state of the art temperature/humidity controlled wine storage facility
with 54 individual cellar rooms rented to private clients.
The
Fine Wine Online site was relaunched this month, with a new design and
a new 'Wine Categorisation' function developed by FWDC, and believed to
be a world-first. Previously, as with most online shopping sites, you could
search for a particular wine by key word, or browse all wines under broad
categories (eg., red wines). Now, when you find a wine that appeals, you
can view a selection of similarly styled/priced wines by clicking on the
link below that says "View more wines like this". The proprietary
categorisation software accurately groups wines into similar style and
relative price point categories. The shopping process is nicely laid out,
easy to follow and includes a gift/wrap/card option. The site also covers
various specials, ordering and shipping info', the FWDC wine tasting programme,
wine and food matching, wine gifts & accessories, wine news and events,
and a regular newsletter (Jeff's column).
